Compilation CD: Transmission Nederlands

VARIOUS : Transmission Nederlands (End 006) : 14,00 €

CD – Released on May 28th 2010

The Netherlands, Holland to some (though incorrectly: Holland is a part of The Netherlands), the lowlands by the North Sea. Clogs, wind-mills, tullips, dikes and (semi-) legal soft drugs. And in the 80s mass unemployment, a strong anti-nuke campaign and squatting: the perfect, solid basis for doing your own music. No pressure for time or money. As the Dutch writer Martin Bril once noted: 'in the 80s we were all on the dole, bought a record, made cassettes of it for all our friends and did a nice hand colored cover around it' - which is perhaps a more happy remembrance of the 80s than something grey and dull. If there is anything that connects the musicians on this collection, it's this shared background. The 'Do-It-Yourself' ethic, an esthetic of (post-) punk runs through all of this, and not just in music, but also in organising your own fun. Nexda with their cassette shop and stage Studio 12 in Haarlem, or Young Lions' Harold Schellinx with Wally van Middendorp of Minny Pops their Ultra series. Ultra? Though far from a unique movement at all, but nevertheless referred to by some as Ultra - kind of No New York, with the same broad musical interest. From downright doomy post-punk to electronic and even free-form improvisation (although hardly a saxophone in sight - it's a Belgium invention). All gathered around the Dutch magazine Vinyl - famous for its flexi disc, founded by musicians and duly delivering all the right information, from say Talking Heads to Tox Modell. The first issue had Mekanik Kommando, my local Nijmegen heroes and one of the best bands of the era. Their line-up of two bass players, synth, rhythmachine and occasional small other instruments, is the perfect example of such free play in music, yet it never sounds 'difficult' - far from it. Along with their fellow citizens Vice, Bazooka and Das Wesen, they released their own records, on their own label. After twenty-five years hardly anyone on this compilation creates music like this; everybody went on to pursue other interests, inside or outside music. But then lots of these musicians started at a whole different place: the Visitor was once a folk band, members of Mekanik Kommando played jazz rock, while members of Nexda were busking in France (and after Nexda going back to just doing that). Following mass unemployment, nuclear threat, we went to out to get a job, a house and shares. Hardly a surprise that this compilation arrives in the lowest economic ebb since... well, the 80s. It's the paradox of new economy, the job, the house and the shares. This is hardly a movement as such, hardly cold wave, but mere garage music (rather than the home tapers in their bedrooms), side stepping popmusic. Cold wave? As I write this I see, outside the train I am sitting in, through the lowlands, a field covered with snow. It's no longer the 80s, it's 2010. The coldest winter in years, still a cold Dutch wave.

Andy Bell's 'Non-Stop' album press-release and tracklisting

From www.andybell.com

"Connoisseurs of deluxe dance-pop, seductive electro anthems and gold-plated disco grooves - lend me your ears, Andy Bell releases a brand new album, Non-Stop, on 24th May 2010.

Non-Stop, co-produced and co-written by Andy Bell and Pascal Gabriel (S’Express, Ladyhawke, Debbie Harry, Kylie, Little Boots) is a lavish 10 track collection of exquisite dancefloor confessionals from one of the most acclaimed and beloved singers in British pop.

Non-Stop features forthcoming single Call On Me, out 10th May and Honey If You Love Him, a duet with and written by Perry Farrell (of Jane’s Addiction fame), a huge fan of Andy’s voice who suggested the alliance.

Although Andy’s long-running partnership with Vince Clarke in Erasure (recipients of Best British Group at The Brit Awards) remains very much a going concern - since the release of 1986’s debut, Wonderland the duo have gone on to sell over 20 million albums, 5 of them hitting #1 and had 17 Top 10 UK singles - the singer’s second solo album provides a liberating platform for his more clubby, nocturnal, disco-glam side. He has even purposely changed his vocal register and style for much of Non-Stop, putting clear blue water between his soulfully electronic solo voice and his gleaming, poppy Erasure work."

Vince Clarke Never Writes With Synths

Erasure musician Vince Clarke never writes songs with synthesisers, despite his records being driven by electronic sounds.

Vince Clarke never writes songs with synthesisers.

The multi-instrumentalist - a pioneer of electronic pop music, who was a founding member of Depeche Mode and has since enjoyed huge success with bands Yazoo and Erasure - said he writes the basics of all of his songs with other bandmember, Andy Bell, on guitar as synthesisers are "too distracting".

He said: "I started off playing guitar and writing on guitar, and still do actually, when myself and Andy write for our albums then we'll invariably use acoustic guitar and sometimes piano.

"So the electronics and the synthesisers are the tools of the trade really, it just so happens that's what I enjoy using.

"But when it comes down to it the songs that we write now, you can play them on guitar and they're still pretty good songs. We never write with n synthesisers, it's because it would be too distracting.

"Before we go it to turn it into a record, the song has to be great and you always have to keep the song in your head while you're making sounds for it."

Vince, 49, whose hits include 'Just Can't Get Enough' with Depeche Mode and 'A Little Respect' with Erasure, also talked about how he reckons tension helps create the best pop records.

He added: "The perfect song has a catchy chorus, but something that has a bit of tension in it, either with the lyric, or with the disharmony that then it's almost like you get an emotional release when that goes away. That for me is great writing."
